Digital Signage Content – Video from PowerPoint

A number of digital signage systems allow you to use PowerPoint files for content. Since so many people are familiar with PowerPoint, the idea of using a familiar tool is appealing. Plus most businesses, schools or churches already have some PPT slide shows that contain content and graphics that may be useful for their digital signs.

I prefer to output presentations as a video file for ease of use and to eliminate some of the conflicts that can occur when running a slide show directly from PowerPoint. So I started looking for a tool that would take my presentations and convert them to a usable format for digital signs. I found a CNET review of the Leawo PowerPoint to Video software, and since it was an Editor’s Choice (with 4.5 out of 5 rating) I decided to test it. You can try it here: PPT to Video Converter Trial from Leawo

…Leawo PowerPoint to Video is a sleek program that performs its job with no troubles, just how we expected.

Leawo PowerPoint to Video leaves a watermark on output during its trial period. With a professional look and excellent results, we highly recommend this program to anyone looking to perk up their PowerPoint presentations.

I tested the converter using PowerPoint 2003 and 2007. I output FLV, AVI, MOV, and h264 versions of both MOV and AVI. While a lot of audio/video software can be intimidating, this interface was absolutely intuitive and fast. I didn’t even have to use the help files. The batch process worked great as well. In the formats I tested, the conversion was very fast. (HD h264 takes a little longer, but not an unreasonable time.) You can set up the time between slides and even add audio if you didn’t include it in your presentation file. Best of all, all of the animations, timing, links and audio stay intact when you convert.
For the watermarked test below, I set up a couple of slides, added some custom animation sequences and a music file. Here’s the sample.

If you make content for digital signs using PowerPoint, or if you want a self-running file – I suggest trying this free trial. PPT to Video Converter Trial from Leawo (As you can see above, it has a watermark.) If it works for your needs, it’s only $44.95 through regnow/Digital River and you can buy it right from the trial interface. I think this little application may make the process of creating digital sign content a whole lot easier.
